Wet wet wet

March 31, 2008

One month’s worth of rain fell in three hours this morning!! Seriously. It POURED. It was awesome though and J and I felt almost like we were back home. Today was a partial day off for Jonathan and so we went out to the Leaf Tea Merchants for a cup of tea and game of cards. The dilemma that J has when going out is that his conscience troubles him – here we are spending money on tea and nibbles, that are a luxury and not a necessity, when people are dying for lack of a $1 medication. I don’t know what to say to him. What’s the wise way to live? Any thoughts?

PS Ace present KJ, thank you!!! NYC seems just that little bit closer and I totally needed a bag like that to carry our groceries back from the store. Very cool!

Happy Birthday Mister Nathan

March 30, 2008

Nathan Cates turns NINE today – I can hardly believe it! The picture below is one of my favourite of him – we went to Central Park to a fun fair, just me and Nathan when he was 4 or 5, and we took a ride on the spinning tea cups. Nathan was in charge of the spinning and I honestly thought I was going to be sick with all the twirling which he thought was hilarious and spun faster which made me laugh a lot!! Happy Birthday kiddo!nathan.jpg

hair cut

March 28, 2008

I have had the same hairdresser since I was about 15. Sometimes when I’m living abroad I have to go to someone else though which pains me!! Today I went, on the recommendation of a friend, to Cottesloe and had my hair cut. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised!! She cut it with a razor blade which intrigued me but I’m happy with the result. J knew I was going to get my hair cut and was at home studying when I left. When I got back he asked if I’d had a nice time and didn’t say anything about my hair – he hadn’t even noticed! He thought I’d gone to Cottesloe to pay our rent!! He truly is of the male variety!! I decided to take a picture for the blog of my hair cut but it’s so boring on photobooth to just take a normal photo so I played about a bit – it kinda defeats the point of the photo because you can’t really see my hair but it’s fun!!hair-cut-2.jpg

night life

March 27, 2008

Jonathan has exams in August. Big exams for which a lot of studying is being carried out now. Being the supportive wife that I am (and also the fact that I love studying and miss learning!) I’ve been learning with him too; we listen to emergency medicine podcasts together and I read the books and then test him. We’ve also got bits of paper up on the wall of the toilet which gradually I’m learning (as is he!) So I can now tell you about the apgar score and the Wells score which lets me know how likely you are to have a PE (pulmonary embolism!!) and yesterday we were reading ECGs!! Anyway, what am I to do with all this knowledge? Obviously I need to act on it and so last night I was a doctor and treated patients and directed traumas… this was in my sleep! I did, however, let Jonathan know what I was doing in my kind sleep-talking way!!! I woke up exhausted from all this life-saving. Phew, it’s hard work being a doctors wife!!

a reminder of home

March 26, 2008

Today I got on our wee (borrowed) bike and cycled to Cottesloe (about 10 minutes up the coast). It was a beautiful day and such a joy to cycle along the ocean front seeing the sun sparkling on a calm clear sea. The purpose of my trip was to meet up with Alan and Ann MacFarlane and we had a lovely strawberry and mango smoothie in a cafe overlooking the ocean. Alan and Ann are long time friends of my aunt and uncle (Jacqui and Roland) and helped me out greatly with my visa fiasco on my way to NYC for the first time in 2000. It was lovely to see some Scottish people and be reminded of home!

Juno

March 26, 2008

Once again I have to commend this movie to you! We went to see it at the outdoor cinema last night which is just a short stroll from our house. It was a lovely evening to sit outside and watch a great movie. If you haven’t seen it I do suggest you make the effort!        PS when you’re making something with curry paste always check the strength BEFORE you put a whole lot in – J and I could hardly finish it yesterday because of runny noses and tears in our eyes… ooops!!

Post nights

March 25, 2008

So there’s been a dearth of photos recently. I thought I’d pop a couple in but there were only ones that Morv had taken of spiders and silverfish. To balance them out there’s one of the lovely Morv at her sepia best. I actually was at work the other night when the spider in question (exhibit 1) decided to grace our toilet wall with its presence. I got a slightly panicked text early on in my shift asking what to do. This however pales in comparison to the last time the invasion of the native fauna occurred. It was Dunedin last time and I was anaesthetising a patient when my phone went off… “there’s a mouse…in the kitchen…I’m standing on a chair…what should I do???!!” ….beep…beep…beep…blood pressure 142/68….sats 97%….beep…beep…beep. Needless to say I cracked up and almost put the endotracheal tube in the patients ear.

Anyway she dealt well with this one. It was was still under the glass on the kitchen table when I got back and was sent swiftly over the balcony. It’ll probably be back…

I’m just finished my 4th night so am on borrowed time. However we are going to see Juno at the outdoor cinema with the free tickets I got. So long!

Ps Mike we’re down to our last bottle!

pancakes

March 24, 2008

Aren’t pancakes just about the best breakfast you can have? I have such fond NYC memories of pancakes with the Cates and my very own husband is a whizz at them too. This morning we were round at John and Janet’s for said breakfast delight and they didn’t disappoint. Poor J was pretty wrecked after a hard night shift but he managed to stay awake for breakfast before trying to get a full day sleep. Tonight is his last night – thankfully!! Incidentally I meant to pass on my congratulations to the boys in blue (not the police but Chelsea!) a great win over Arsenal!!
