how to sleep?

May 31, 2008

It’s almost 1pm and Jonathan should be 3 hours into his day sleep. He’s not though. Short of taking some kind of drugs any advice on things to do to induce sleep? I’ve never had a problem sleeping so cannot rely on my own experience but I thought ‘what would J’s granny do?’ so I went out and bought a lavender heat bag that you stick in the microwave. I’m just home with it and so he’s giving it a go. Any other suggestions? If he doesn’t sleep much today tonight could be tricky!! Of course the fact that there has been a MAMMOTH thunder and lightning storm going on all morning probably isn’t helping!!

Yesterday was lovely though and so we took off over lunchtime and went for a cycle by the river and then cut back over to the ocean for a wee paddle – perfect (except for the two mosquito bites I received!!)

happy birthday!

May 29, 2008

happy birthday to you

happy birthday to you

happy birthday dear sweet mum

happy birthday to you!!

Hope you have an excellent day off!!

I got an email from an old school friend yesterday. It’s funny to think that 12 years have gone by since I left school and what a lot has happened in those years. It was so good to catch up with her though and hear what she’s been doing for those years. I like that about the internet.

PS I apologise for the lack of picture recently – I will get on to it tomorrow!

PPS Rearranged the kitchen tonight (that’s what I do when J is at work!!) I don’t think that merits a picture though!!

PPPS Loving the name discussions on the last blog!! I’d just like to say that we DO NOT have an announcement to make though!!

rainy day

May 28, 2008

J and I walked to Cottesloe today and even with an umbrella (reminiscent of Central Park seven months ago!) we got wet wet wet. I love it though!! I took J to MY library for the first time and we read a little (he perused a science magazine and I looked at Time) and then we went for a coffee (flat white for J). While there we were doing a word puzzle on a piece of paper (we do lead an exciting life!) and this man came up to us and said “I think you should choose a short one” and we were like “what?!?!” and he said “baby names, is that not what you’re doing?” How random!!

The food experiments continue and our flat smells awesome – roast lamb and Jamie Oliver’s balsamic potatoes and red onions for tea tonight. We don’t eat this fancy usually honest, but today is a day off for J!!

experimental eats

May 27, 2008

Today has turned into a productive kitchen day for me and J. This wasn’t the plan when we got up this morning but somehow it evolved. Granted my experiment only stretched as far as muffins (and I had a basic recipe) but it was the first time I’d made them and they turned out really tasty – raspberry and white chocolate. We took them to the beach with the Gedi and had a wee picnic by the playpark which was lovely! J had teaching this morning and so when he came home at lunchtime I was just pulling the first batch out of the oven and the house smelled divine (I always feels like the good wee wife when I have home baking ready for J after work. He rightly pointed out that this can’t happen too often or we’ll have to order an extra seat for him on the plane on the way home!!) J decided to make a Thai inspired ginger and garlic vegetable stir-fry for tea with broccolini and cashews – seriously yummy! He then made humous (I’m yet to be convinced by it) and is now marinading lamb for tomorrow dinner.

My approach to cooking is to get a recipe and follow it loosely. J’s is to not use a recipe at all!!

West Wing

Series 6 is now in my possession. Let the fun begin!!

beach bliss

May 25, 2008

Seriously, this weather is ace!! 22oC today and just delightful to be down at the beach listening to a sermon on my ipod. I do love being able to see the sea and paddle in it and just watch the waves crashing. Very cool!

how would the world be different if…

May 24, 2008

Jonathan has started asking me random questions that all begin ‘how would the world be different if…’ For example, if… all cars were yellow or apples had no cores or our feet face backwards. Little mind expanding thoughts (or not!)

We’ve also started deliberately remembering stories and telling them to each other. Stories about us and things we’ve done, places we’ve been etc but also our individual stories. It’s been rather fun so far!!

Babysitting this afternoon and evening while the Gedi go to a wedding. It is pleasantly fun to hang out with a toddler and play and sing songs and dance (although I suspect part of the fun of it is that I’m not responsible for her all the time!!)

thoughts

May 22, 2008

I’ve been reading a book today on prophecy (well, actually I’ve been reading two books – one is on prophecy, the other is about the TV show Spooks which I’m also watching on DVD and loving!!) Anyway, Brueggemann in the prophecy book says that the “task of prophetic ministry is to nurture, nourish, and evoke a consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture around us.” That phrase sums up a lot of things I’ve been thinking about without necessarily being aware of thinking about them (does that make sense?) It ties into KJ’s thoughts on living generously too I think. How is it possible not to be completely sucked into our culture? Especially the materialism? Jonathan definitely helps me question our culture more than I did before we got married but I think it’s really hard (if not impossible) to see objectively the way society influences the way we think and speak and act. Hmmm. I can see how easy it would be for me to get trapped in wanting to live the good, comfortable life (is there anything wrong with that?) without looking for more and therefore getting dull to the things of God. I need my eyes opened somehow!!

NB No hard feelings JT!! (not you Jamesie!! In fact I bet you’ve got a MAHOOSIVE smile on your face today – congratulations!! You too Scott and Mark and any other red fans who check in here!)

kitchens and stuff

May 21, 2008

KJ had a link to this site. I just LOVE the idea of the kitchen cupboards, Jonathan isn’t quite so sure but to me it’s awesome!! And I have a wee while to work on him.

Read an article in the New York magazine today on faithfulness in marriage and then talked about Jeremiah 3 tonight at home group. It made me want to go and study more and write an essay!! Lots to think about…

Champions League final tonight – I’m so excited AND I’ve just discovered that it’s on TV here live at 2:45am. I have to get up and watch it!! Playgroup tomorrow morning might be a struggle but it’s too good to miss! Come on the blues!!!

home update

May 20, 2008

Mum and Mike are both right!

Jonathan reckons that home is now wherever he is which is true too!
