one of those days

June 30, 2008

You know when you have those days when things just go a bit pear shaped? Today was one of those for me! And it’s not even over!

It started out well enough – a walk to Cottesloe to pay our rent and go to the library. Then a big grocery shop on the way home. Decided to bake a cake for our guests tonight and so took off my rings – well I was in the process of taking off my rings when they slipped out of my wet hands and dropped to the floor… and the tanzanite stone fell out of my engagement ring!!! It’s not damaged at all (neither is the setting) but it makes me so sad that I can’t wear my ring at the moment!! And my wedding band looks so lonely all by itself!

So I made the cake thinking that because we got a new element in our oven it was working perfectly. well it works a wee bit better but still when we cut through the cake bits of it weren’t cooked!!! (I had done the toothpick test in various places as I was taught!) So my come-to-the-rescue husband very cleverly cut the middle out and arranged strawberries there and at least it’ll be a conversation piece tonight!

We have the Trevitts coming round for dinner – all five of them! (They’re family friends of J’s)

So here’s hoping that nothing else goes pete tong before the day is through!!

quiet weekend

June 29, 2008

Sometimes it’s nice to have a quiet weekend – you know, lots of reading and a wee spot of baking and a walk every now and then. J’s been on weekend day shifts which he enjoys the most (the fact that it’s a slightly shorter shift helps too!) And then tonight round to the Gedi’s for a delicious dinner and chat. Just lovely!

I was on catechism again this morning and was talking about covenant and used Genesis 15 as an example. My multi-talented husband even drew me this cow to aid in my talk!

pillow fights

June 27, 2008

Jonathan’s study breaks are mostly filled with cad rum (or another card game) or a bit of dancing or a wee snack. Not today. Today we stuffed pillows up our jumpers and tried to push each other over to the other side of the room. What other couple do you know does this?!? I love it!! (I did keep cheating and used my shoulder a bit hence the photograph angle!)

Tonight we helped out with the bread run. Our church collects left over bread from a local bakery and takes it to a group of council flats nearby and gives it out. It was fun to go along with J and knock on peoples doors and have a wee chat. One man we spoke to was from Chile and knew that Alex Ferguson managed Aberdeen in the 1980s!! Jonathan was exceedingly impressed!

Earlier today I took a trip with the Geddes girls to a huge shopping mall in the suburbs. It probably wasn’t that massive but compared to what I’ve been shopping in up until now it was pretty big. All I bought though was a big piece of paper to make a chart for our next three months – you’re money is safe with me J!!

thursday thoughts

June 26, 2008

Well, here are my eyes!! Just to prove they’re different!

And it has got slightly colder here (in fact it was 3oC in the middle of the night a couple of days ago). The average daytime temperature is around 20oC I think. Despite that J is still cold!!

Today at playgroup (which I still love attending!!!) One of the wee girls (aged about 2) looked at me and said ‘Morven, why are you just wearing a t-shirt and not a jumper?’ Even here people think I don’t wear enough layers!

Everyone needs time off and so while I was out this morning J stopped in at a cafe on his way back from the hospital to have a flat white and read the New Yorker (I splashed out and bought it yesterday – makes me feel more connected with the city I love!!) I gave him the camera and suggested he took a photo (he just loves looking like a tourist beside his place of work!!!??) Anyway, from this photo I can pretend that we might actually be living in NYC!!

once again the night walker strikes!

June 24, 2008

Seriously, what is happening? The night before last I woke up to find myself unlocking the FRONT DOOR!!! Thankfully I woke up and J woke up and was ready to come rescue me!!! Oh goodness. I don’t think I was trying to escape!!! I looked up sleep walking on line and I don’t have any of the triggering factors (there certainly isn’t any stress in my life!) All quiet last night though.

J and I tried to watch Othello the other day but Kenneth Brannagh did such a good job at Iago that I found myself getting more and more irate with him so we turned it off! We googled the ending and, to be honest, I’m glad we didn’t watch is all – it’s certainly a tragedy!!

J has divulged his delicious pancake recipe to me and I love it! Pancakes and a watermelon mango and raspberry smoothie for breakfast this morning – can’t say better than that!!

Oh, and I randomly watched Top Gear last night. It was so good! They were driving across Botswana in these beat up non-4 wheel drive cars to prove to the people of Surrey that you don’t need a four-wheel drive car. Genius TV!!

doughnut song

June 22, 2008

Apologies for the lack of listening material last night. I forgot to delete the post once we realised we couldn’t upload the song. We had some fun yesterday playing with garage band. I’ll keep working on how to upload it.

I do have many weird body features – different coloured eyes, a depressed sternum and now my stomach is caving in (well not my stomach exactly but there is a dip below my left rib). My doctor husband doesn’t seem to concerned by this latest oddity though and you’d think he’d know!! (Incidentally I did try to take a photo of my eyes but I looked stupid and cross-eyed so that isn’t going to be published!!)

All this awesome sport is happening and I can’t watch it – Euro 2008, Wimbledon, F1 – further proof that I can’t live here forever!!

We’re about to start West Wing 7 and I have no idea who is going to win the election – bring it on!!

award winning ads

June 21, 2008

These ads are great! The gorilla one was a favourite with my kids at school but the Volkswagon one is clever too. In fact most of them are worth a wee look!

J had a study day today which means I also learned things too. For example I now know the criteria to use when assessing whether someone who has come into the ED and has been suicidal can be sent home! You just never know when I might need to use it!

nothing to say

June 20, 2008

Seriously, who sits down to write a blog and has NOTHING to say. You’d think I’d be able to drag up some kind of inspiration or topic but no, nada, niet, niente.

I did have a wifely dilemma at lunchtime though. J finished night shift this morning and slept for two hours. He’s been coming down with a cold and feels a bit rotten but was meant to be at a tutorial at 1pm and, harsh wife that I am, I made him get up, handed him a sandwich and shooed him out the door!! Selfishly I wanted him to stay with me but these tutorials are so valuable. I did make him a tasty sandwich though – does that make up for kicking your sick husband out of bed after only two hours sleep?!!

We also watched some old home movies tonight – from NYC and NZ – such good memories (in the NYC ones Caroline was just little and Betsy wasn’t even born!!) I’m so glad I’ve been taking bits of video footage over the years!!

Well, it turns out I did have a little something to say!

another beach trip

June 18, 2008

I reckon I only remember to take the camera out with me when we’re going to the beach. J’s on night shifts so sleeps most of the day but we did manage to have a wee trip this afternoon.

there were a whole lot of surfers out today (and sea kayakers)

We had spinach gratin for tea tonight (a barefoot contessa recipe) which for me is great comfort food (not that I need comfort!) It led us to a discussion about favourite comfort foods – any suggestions?!

lewis

June 16, 2008

My brother is getting married in August and we received our invitation today. They’ve set up a website and the quote on the first page says – “I can’t wait to get married – it’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.” The wedding gifts section made me smile too! That’s my brother!!

Another long day for J today – we are counting down the days until the studying is over!! I hung out with the Geddes girls this afternoon – with a poorly toddler and a 8 week old baby Janet welcomed the additional adult pair of hands!!

And our oven is fixed!!!! It makes me so pleased.
